Jesus speaks again (John 1, John 8:54) of his glory with the Father. We, Christ's followers, have no glory of our own but participate in the glory of Christ. The commandment is new but not because the need to love is new, but because the command comes from Christ, the mediator of the new covenant in his blood which is shed for his people. The new covenant is better, built on better promises, and it is written in the hearts of his people. We are to love one another as Christ has loved us. Jesus love for us is infinite, steadfast, wise, selfless, sacrificial, forgiving, and serving. Our love for one another should be the same as that. Love is the first fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22), and this love we show is the primary sign to the world that we are Christians.
