Loving Service and Sacrifice - John 13:1-5

Here, Jesus begins the upper room discourse (John 13-17, five chapters devoted to a mere 3 hours) by a stunning act of service. The Lord Jesus Christ, second person of the trinity, glorious and majestic, deserving of all praise and honor, humbles himself to a slave task, washing the feet of his disciples (reminds of Philippians 2:5-11). Even more shocking is that Jesus is preparing to do so much more in just a matter of hours - the washing away of all the sins of all his people. By application for us is that we do well to follow Jesus's example and take the opportunities that come our way to serve others.
