During Jesus's sermon on the mount, He teaches that His followers are salt and light. As light, the followers, including Jesus's followers today, those in the church, are to shine, to not be in disguise but show their true character shining forth. This shining is seen in the good works of God's people - good works is how we shine in the world. The result of our shining is that others may see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven. And glorifying our Father in heaven is the main purpose of life.
